The Author: 

Alfred George Gardiner (1865 - 1946) was a British journalist and author. His essays, written under the pen name, 'Alpha of the Plough,' are highly regarded. His uniqueness lay in his ability to teach the basic truths of life in an easy and amusing manner. The Pillars of society, Pebbles on the Shore, Many Furrows, and Leaves in the Wind are some of his well-known writings.

The Text : 

In this text, which is an edited version of Gardiner's essay of the same name, the author observes how a bus conductor makes a lady go up to the uncovered top of a double-decker bus on a freezing evening just because she is carrying a dog. While watching the incident and its reaction among other passengers, the author wonders whether rules should be tempered with goodwill in order to make them more humane.

I was travelling in a bus. 

আমি একটি বাসে ভ্রমণ করছিলাম।

It was a bitterly cold night, and even at the far end of the bus the east wind cut like a knife. 

এটি একটি তীব্র ঠান্ডার রাত, এমনকি বাসের শেষ প্রান্তেও পূর্বের বাতাস (ঠান্ডায় যেন) ছুরির মতো কাটছিল।

The bus stopped and two women and a man got in together and filled the vacant places.

The younger woman carried a little Pekinese dog.

The conductor came in and took their fares.

Then his eye rested on the beady-eyed dog.

I saw trouble coming up. 

দেখলাম ঝামেলা হতে পারে।

This was the opportunity for which the conductor had been waiting, and he intended to make the most of it.

এই ছিল সেই সুযোগ যার জন্য কন্ডাক্টর অপেক্ষা করছিলেন , এবং তিনি এটিকে সবচেয়ে বেশি কাজে লাগাতে চেয়েছিলেন। 

I had marked him as the type who had a general vague grievance about everything.

আমি তাকে এমন একটা টাইপ হিসাবে চিহ্নিত করেছি যার সবকিছু সম্পর্কে সাধারণ একটা অস্পষ্ট অভিযোগ ছিল। 

He had seemed to have a particular grievance against passengers who came and sat in his bus while he shivered at the door. 

মনে হচ্ছিলো তার একটা বিশেষ অভিযোগ আছে যাত্রীদের প্রতি যারা এসে তার বাসের ভিতরে বসেছিল যখন তাকে দরজায় দাঁড়িয়ে কাঁপতে হচ্ছিলো।

"You must take that dog out", he said. 

"আপনাকে অবশ্যই ওই কুকুরটিকে বের করে নিতে হবে", তিনি বললেন।

"I shall certainly do nothing of the kind. You can take my name and address," said the woman.

"আমি অবশ্যই এই ধরণের কিছু করব না। আপনি আমার নাম এবং ঠিকানা নিতে পারেন," মহিলাটি বললেন।

She had evidently expected the challenge and knew the reply.

তিনি স্পষ্টতই চ্যালেঞ্জটি আশা করেছিলেন এবং উত্তরটি জানতেন (অর্থাৎ তার উত্তর তৈরি ছিল)।

"You must take the dog out - that's my order."

"আপনাকে অবশ্যই কুকুরটিকে বের করে নিতে হবে - এটি আমার আদেশ।"

"I won't go on the top of the bus in such weather. It would kill me," said the woman. 

"এমন আবহাওয়ায় আমি বাসের ওপরে উঠব না। এটা আমাকে মেরে ফেলবে," মহিলা বললেন। 

"Certainly not," said her lady companion. " You've got a cough as it is."

"It's nonsense," said her male companion.

"এটা অর্থহীন," তার পুরুষ সঙ্গী বললেন।

The conductor pulled the bell, and the bus stopped. 

কন্ডাক্টর বেল টেনে দিলেন, এবং বাস থামল।

This bus doesn't go on until that dog is brought out.

এই বাস চলবে না যতক্ষণ না ওই কুকুরটিকে বের করা হয়।

He stopped on to the pavement and waited.

তিনি ফুটপাথে থেমে অপেক্ষা করতে লাগলেন।

It was his moment of triumph.

এটি ছিল তার বিজয়ের মুহূর্ত। 

He had the law on his side. 

আইন তার পক্ষে ছিল।

Everybody in the bus was on the side of the lady and her dog.

বাসের সবাই মহিলা এবং তার কুকুরের পক্ষে ছিল।

They talked in raised voices:

"Shameful." 

"Call the police!"

"Let's all report him!"

"লজ্জাজনক।"

"Let's make him give us our fares back."

"আসুন ওকে আমাদের ভাড়া ফেরত দিতে বাধ্য করি।" 

"Yes, that's it; let's make him give us our fares back!"

"হ্যাঁ, ঠিক তাই; আসুন ওকে আমাদের ভাড়া ফেরত দিতে বাধ্য করি!"

The little animal sat blinking at the dim lights, unconscious of the trouble he had caused.

ছোট্ট প্রাণীটি অস্পষ্ট আলোতে বসে চোখ পিট্ পিট্ করছিলো, তার সৃষ্ট সমস্যা সম্পর্কে অজ্ঞাত। 

The conductor came to the door. 

কন্ডাক্টর দরজায় এলেন।

Some passengers demanded, "Give us our fare back - you've engaged to carry us - you can't leave us here all night!" 

কয়েকজন যাত্রী দাবি করলেন, "আমাদের ভাড়া ফেরত দিন - আপনি আমাদের বহন করার জন্য নিযুক্ত আছেন - আপনি আমাদের এখানে সারা রাত রেখে দিতে পারবেন না!" 

"No fares back," said the conductor. 

কন্ডাক্টর বলল, "কোন ভাড়া ফেরত নেই।"

Two or three passengers got out and disappeared into the night. 

দু-তিনজন যাত্রী বের হয়ে এলো এবং রাতের অন্ধকারে  অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেলো।

The conductor turned on the pavement, went to the driver to have a talk with him. 

কন্ডাক্টর ফুটপাথের উপর ঘুরে দাঁড়ালেন, ড্রাইভারের সাথে কথা বলতে গেলেন।

Another bus, the last on the road, went by. আল এবাউট এ ডগ

আরেকটি বাস, রাস্তার শেষ বাস, পাশ দিয়ে চলে গেল।

It seemed indifferent to the shouts of the passengers to stop. 

থামার জন্য যাত্রীদের চিৎকারে প্রতি এটিকে উদাসীন মনে হলো।

A policeman strolled up and looked in at the door. 

একজন পুলিশ হেঁটে এগিয়ে এলো এবং দরজার দিকে তাকাল।

The passengers burst out with indignant protests and appeals. 

ক্ষোভে ফেটে পড়লেন যাত্রীরা। 

"Well, he's got his rules, you know," he said genially. 

"ঠিক আছে, তার নিয়ম "ঠিক আছে, আপনারা জানেন," তিনি উদারভাবে বললেন।

Then he went away to stand a few yards down the street. 

তারপর তিনি কয়েক গজ এগিয়ে গিয়ে রাস্তায় দাঁড়ালেন।

There he was joined by two more constables.

Still the little dog blinked at the lights and the conductor walked to and fro like a captain in the hour of victory.

She expressed her anger to the three policemen who stood up the street watching the drama.

Then she came back, called her companion, and vanished.

He stood triumphant, while his conduct was criticized in his face by the passengers.

Meanwhile, the lady with the dog stole down the stairs and re-entered the bus.

When the engine was put right, the conductor came back and pulled the bell.

The whole struggle began all over once again.

The conductor walked on the pavement, the little dog blinked at the lights, the lady again declared that she would not go to the top, and finally went. 

কন্ডাক্টর ফুটপাথের উপর হেঁটে গেলেন, ছোট্ট কুকুরটি আলোর দিকে পিট্ পিট্  করে তাকাচ্ছিলো , ভদ্রমহিলা আবার ঘোষণা করলেন যে তিনি উপরে যাবেন না এবং অবশেষে চলে গেলেন।

The bus was soon empty, and I was the last passenger left behind.

বাসটি শীঘ্রই খালি হয়ে গেল, এবং আমিই শেষ যাত্রী ছিলাম।

"I've got my rules," the conductor said to me. 

"আমি আমার নিয়ম মেনে চলেছি," কন্ডাক্টর আমাকে বললেন।

He had won his victory, but felt that he would like to justify himself to somebody. 

তিনি জিতে ছিলেন, কিন্তু অনুভব করেছিলেন যে তিনিই ঠিক তা কাউকে বোঝানো দরকার।

"Rules," I said, "are necessary things. 

"নিয়ম," আমি বললাম, "প্রয়োজনীয় জিনিস।

Some are hard and fast rules, like the rule of the road, which cannot be broken without danger to life and limb. 

কিছু আছে কঠিন এবং কড়া নিয়ম, রাস্তার নিয়মের মতো, যা জীবন এবং অঙ্গের বিপদ না ঘটিয়ে ভাঙা যায় না।

But some are only rules for your guidance, like that rule about the dogs.

They are meant to be observed in the spirit, not in the letter, for the comfort of the passengers.

You have kept the rule, but broken its spirit.

He took it very well, and when I got off the bus he said "Good night" quite amiably.

তিনি এটি খুব ভালভাবে নিলেন, এবং যখন আমি বাস থেকে নামলাম তখন তিনি বেশ আন্তরিকভাবে "শুভ রাত্রি" বললেন।
