Swami Vivekananda:

The great disciple of Ramakrishna Paramhansa Deva, an incarnation of God Narayana to the Hindus, Swami Vivekananda, the cyclonic Hindu monk of India, was born January 12, 1863, at Simla in Calcutta ( presently Kolkata ). His father’s name was Biswanath Dutta and his mother was Bhubaneswari Devi. His real name was Narendranath Dutta, while his nickname was Bile. Bile was very naughty and restless but very bold and brave. He used to meditate in childhood; it was a form of his game. It is said that his mother had a dream before his birth that God Shiva himself would take birth as her son. The Hindus believe that he was an incarnation of God Shiva.

Narendranath had his early education at home and school education at the Metropolitan School in Calcutta. Then he was admitted to the Presidency College and later to the General Assemblies Institution. After his father’s death, his family became very poor. Narendranath at this time tried hard for a job but he remained jobless. In this time most of the days, he had to starve. Often he stays out of the home pretending that he had an invitation to some friend’s house. He was very much suffering from poverty and started disbelieving in God.  At that time, young Narendranath heard about Sri Ramakrishna and met him at Dakshineswar. He was tremendously influenced by Ramakrishna and became his disciple by renouncing the world.

He was then known as Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda traveled all through India on foot. He met people and observed their lives closely. He felt pain for the poor and suffering people who had no food, no clothes. He wanted people to awaken. He wanted people to feel and love for their nation.

After the death of his master, Swami Vivekananda went to America to join the World’s Parliament of Religion held in Chicago in 1893. Swamiji lectured on Vedanta there and gradually captured the hearts of the people of the whole world. He came back to India and founded the Ramkrishna Math and Mission at Belur in 1898 for the service of suffering humanity. This great prophet and patriot of India died on July 4, 1902. But his great ideas and ideals will continue to live in mankind.
